A social media playbook is a written strategy for your social accounts: what social media should do for the business, who your customers are, the kinds of posts you will rotate through, and how a follower becomes a customer. Building it before you post means every post has a job, instead of being a guess made on the day.

What is a social media playbook?

It is the plan behind the posts. Where a brand profile describes how you sound and look, a playbook describes what you are trying to do and for whom. It answers questions you would otherwise answer differently each time you sit down to write.

Without one, social media tends to become a feed of whatever came to mind: a promotion this week, a holiday greeting the next, a photo with no point. The playbook gives every post a reason to exist.

What should a social media playbook include?

Start with goals. Decide what you want social media to do in the next 90 days, such as more calls, more website visits or more people through the door. Different goals call for different posts.

Then write down your customers: the question they ask first, what worries them, what they say afterwards, and the myth you most want to clear up. Add what makes you different and why customers choose you.

Finally, set the rhythm. Pick a small number of content pillars (the DigitalShyft playbook uses five), meaning the repeating kinds of post you will rotate through, so that some posts attract attention, some build trust, and some ask for the sale. Add a clear next step for anyone who follows and a list of what is off-limits.

Why build a playbook before you post?

Because the questions are cheaper to answer once than on every post. A written plan lets you check any idea against it: does this serve a goal, speak to a real customer, and fit a pillar? If not, skip it.

It also makes posting something others can do. Whether you write the posts yourself, hand them to a colleague or use an AI writer, the playbook is the brief they all work from.

How does the DigitalShyft portal draft a social media playbook?

Every client gets a Social Playbook in the portal. The AI drafts it first, reading your approved brand profile (or a draft, marked as unapproved), your onboarding answers, your website, your connected social pages and the searches that find you on Google. It answers what those sources show and builds a first playbook from them.

You see a short set of plain questions in six steps, covering your goals, your customers, what makes you different, what you sell, your limits and the content you like. A few can only come from you, such as the myth you want to clear up, and those are left blank unless a source says it outright.

You open the review from a link, with no login. If the answers are fine, you approve. If you change any, the playbook is rebuilt around your answers and approved when the rebuild lands.

What does the playbook change in your posts?

The playbook sets how often you post and your hashtags. Hashtags are started from your services, your area and the searches that bring people to you. It also sets the best time of day for each network. Once approved, the social writer reads it on every post, in an order of authority: your brand profile first, then the playbook, then anything learned from how you use the portal.

From the playbook, we can also plan your next 30 days: one post per posting day, each with a platform, a content pillar, a format, a goal and an opening line. Posts from that plan are still approved by a person before they go out.

Frequently asked questions

Is a social media playbook the same as a content calendar?
No. The playbook is the strategy: goals, customers, pillars and how followers become customers. A content calendar is the schedule of specific posts. The calendar is built from the playbook, which is why the playbook comes first.
Do I have to answer questions from scratch?
No. The AI drafts the answers from your brand profile, onboarding answers, website, connected social pages and Google searches. You review them and change what is wrong. Questions only you can answer are left blank unless a source states them.
Does every client get a Social Playbook in the DigitalShyft portal?
Yes, whether or not social publishing is switched on for the account. It is drafted first, and you approve it from a link without logging in.
Does the playbook publish posts automatically?
No. It guides what the writer produces. Posts planned from it are approved by a person before they are published.
